Toon Trouble - Allardyce departs, Shearer ruled out
This season would certainly be a bad one for the managers, the likes of Jose Mourinho, Martin Jol and now Sam Allardyce becoming the latest casualty of the sacking business. But in Sam’s case he was still in his first season at Newcastle, and with him Newcastle have sacked another manager, and now another one must come in to fill in his shoes.
With the rate at which new ones are coming and going at St. James Park one would feel is it the manager really or does Newcastle really has some problems? I would certainly agree to the notion that there is something wrong in the system, or else Big Sam wouldn’t have become the latest casualty in the sack race. And it wasn’t really as big a surprise since there was so much pressure on him, but why does it happen again and again to Newcastle? In my season preview I said Newcastle would be a team to watch, Big Sam would finally be the one to take Newcastle where it wants to be, but then it never really materialized. The transfers weren’t helping and the team wasn’t strengthened where it should have been. The midfield was lacking flair, the defense was leaking goals easily, the goals weren’t coming freely.
Newcastle has always big ambitions, but never real depth and squad to fulfill those ambitions. Success can’t be bought by money nor managers, its a tough thing to come by, and this Newcastle must understand. Changing mangers isn’t the solution but they should look into their team and wonder what is wrong. I hope, and it does look like, Alan Shearer won’t take up the job. A great player he has been but he is not a Roy Keane. He is better off at BBC Match of the Day, then getting drenched in a long overcoat and shouting at his players. Next favorite for bookies was Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp, who was quick to say “NO” to Newcastle, and I appreciate that. He is really having a great time with Portsmouth, and just because the media or Newcastle fans or anyone in the world wants him to, shouldn’t be a reason for him to move there. Martin Jol, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klinsmann, Marcello Lippi and former England boss Steve McClaren are now linked to the job. And whoever would want to goto that job would have to think deep before saying “yes”. The club’s owner likes to watch their games in the stands with the fans, so its a given that he won’t always listen to good things about whoever is the manager, he should stop letting those comments get into his head and think from a analyst point of view. Their fans also don’t quite have the patience and should understand that success isn’t achieved over a day. It takes time to build a club which is really capable of winning something, and until everyone at St. James Park realizes that, its a tough time for any manager who goes there.
